Can You Have a Marquee Wedding in Winter? Everything You Need to Know
Can you really have a marquee wedding in winter? (Short answer: yes, and here’s why it works beautifully). When couples picture a marquee wedding, they almost always imagine long summer days, sunshine, and warm evenings. But one of the most common questions I get is: can you actually have a marquee wedding in winter without everyone freezing?
After Millie and Jack’s wedding at home in December, I can confidently say: yes, you absolutely can. And not only that, it can feel incredibly special.
Millie and Jack’s wedding began with a church ceremony held right behind the family grounds, which instantly made the whole day feel personal and relaxed. No travel, no logistical stress, just a seamless flow from ceremony into celebration.
After a confetti line and the couple’s exit in the family’s classic Porsche, guests made their way to the marquee, which was a completely bespoke in its design. It wasn’t just placed on the lawn; it was thoughtfully built to wrap around the house and even incorporate trees from the garden. It created this beautiful “inside-outside” feel while still being fully protected from the winter weather.
But what about the cold, I hear you say? This is always the big concern, and rightly so. The key is simple: proper heating. We installed multiple heaters throughout the space to ensure a consistent, comfortable temperature. Once guests were inside, coats came off, drinks were flowing, and honestly it felt just like any other indoor venue. If anything, the contrast between the crisp winter air outside and the warm, glowing marquee inside made it feel even more inviting, and incredibly cosy.
One of the biggest advantages of a marquee is flexibility, and we really made the most of that here. The marquee was divided into three main areas:
A bar and drinks reception space, complete with live piano and sax music
A dining area, hidden behind soft draping
A dancefloor and stage for the band, also concealed with draping until the time came.
Rather than having everything visible at once, we used draping to gradually reveal each part of the celebration as the day unfolded. Guests moved naturally from one space to the next, and each “reveal” kept the energy building. It’s such a simple design choice, but it makes a huge impact, especially in a winter setting where atmosphere is everything. Another reason why I champion marquee weddings – it is the best way to truly make it your own! Lots of candles throughout the decor also created an additional warmth within the spaces.
The day was stunningly traditional with a three course sit down meal, speeches, and live music. As the evening drew in and the party picked up, the celebration finished with a large firework display outside. And this is where winter really shines. The dark skies, the crisp air, the contrast of warmth inside and spectacle outside created ain incredibly unique moment.
So… Is a Winter Marquee Wedding Possible?
Not only is it possible, it’s a fantastic option. With the right planning, heating, and thoughtful design, a winter marquee wedding can feel:
Warm and inviting
Completely bespoke
Atmospheric in a way summer weddings often aren’t
If you’re dreaming of a marquee but don’t want to wait for summer, don’t rule it out. Winter brings its own kind of magic, you just have to design around it.
